It has been proven that interior design has an impact on our mental health. The way we design, decorate and organize our home affects the way we feel, the way we think and act.

Adopting a minimalist interior design style can have similar effect. It has the power to bring calm, serenity, peace and relaxation into your home.

Usually associated to modern and Scandinavian interior design, minimalist style is often seen as bland, cold and without personality. However, if done correctly, a modern minimalist home can be warm, relaxing, cosy, welcoming, and it can be a great way to organise your life and ease your mind.

Read our 8 tips to create a modern minimalist home.

What is a minimalist interior?

Lucky for you, minimalist interior design style can be quite cheap to adopt and presents different positive traits. Just like modern and Scandinavian interior design styles, minimalist interior is all about functionality, a simple colour palette with pops of colour used as accents, uncluttered spaces and clean lines.

The biggest challenges with minimalist interior design are to add your own personality to the space without creating clutter, and to make that space feel warm and inviting.

If you have been thinking about incorporating a minimalist lifestyle at home for a while, wait no more. Follow these 8 tips and tricks.

Uncluttered space for an uncluttered mind

One of the main elements of minimalist interior design is decluttering the space. Creating an organized home will help clear your mind and bring you peace, calm and clarity. This step will probably be the longest one, especially if you’re like me and find an emotional attachment to the smallest things. When decluttering your house, keep items that you really need or love, the ones that matter. And if you can’t resist buying a new bag, cushion or throw blanket, try to donate or give away to a friend one item for every item that you buy. This way, you won’t keep storing accessories that you don’t really need or want anymore.

Use baskets, storage boxes, trays or drawer dividers to keep your belongings organized and tidy. This will help your space look bigger and provide a real peace of mind.

Functionality all the way

For a minimalist interior, you have to invest in functional elements in order to have an optimal use of your space without cluttering it. A way to achieve this is by incorporating multi-purpose furniture such as a coffee table with drawers, a couch with a storage compartment to store your throw blankets and cushions, or a storage ottoman for added seating and comfort as well.

 Monochromatic colour palette

Keep your interior colour palette simple. Prefer neutral colours like whites, beiges, creams or greys to make a room look brighter and bigger. Add some character with a touch of colour in your soft furnishings or artwork for example.

Use natural elements

Incorporating natural elements such as wood, rattan or jute into your modern minimalist home can help create a sense of comfort and warmth.

Less is more when decorating

When decorating your minimalist interior, don’t clutter it with unnecessary pieces just because it’s trendy. On the contrary, only keep pieces that have a meaning to you. You also shouldn’t be scared of any empty spaces on your walls or your shelves. They are a great way to rest your eyes, make a break, and bring the focus on the pieces that matter.

Focus on lighting

Natural light plays an important role on your mental health. Having a space filled with natural light will help relax your mind and create a sense of comfort and peace. It will also contribute to making your space look bigger and brighter. Use sheer curtains to keep the room light and airy. If you don’t have a lot of natural light, add sources of artificial light to help brighten up the space. Choose warm light bulbs to give a feeling of cosiness, warmth and comfort.

Keep your home decor simple

When choosing your home décor accessories, focus on simplicity, clean lines and neutral colours for a calm and airy interior. Layer textures and natural fabrics in warm neutral tones to put life into your modern minimalist interior.

Bring the outdoors in

Similar to using natural elements, feeling close to nature can also help create a calm environment and a peaceful mind. Bring the outdoors in by adding indoor plants or even an artwork representing nature.

An organized space, a clearer and peaceful mind, neutral monochromatic colour palette and clean line. Does that sound appealing to you? If the answer is yes, then a minimalist interior might just be the perfect interior design style for you.
