Paint Colour Review: Dune White by Benjamin Moore

Choosing a white paint colour for your home can be stressful and overwhelming with each shade having unique undertones (such as grey, green, or yellow), levels of brightness, and a different way of interacting with light. A versatile white option to consider is Dune White 968 by Benjamin Moore, also called Glacier White OC-37. I absolutely love this white and for different reasons. It is a warm and inviting shade with a perfect balance between softness and sophistication.

Is Dune White the right shade for your interior? Let’s find out together.

Dune White’s undertones

Dune White is a gorgeous warm white colour to consider. It is bright enough to lighten up a space without looking too stark and crisp. Dune White gets its warmth from its subtle neutral greige undertones which is one of the reasons why I love this white so much. Most warm whites have yellow undertones, but Dune White is different. It has a slight softness and is the perfect shade if you want that warmth without any yellow undertones. This neutral base makes Dune White a great white paint colour to use on walls and cabinets.

Dune White’s LRV

LRV (or Light Reflectance Value) helps determine how much light is absorbed or reflected by a paint colour. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 100, 0 being absolute black and absorbing all light, and 100 being pure white and reflecting all light. The higher the LRV, the lighter and brighter the paint colour. The LRV of a paint colour is an important factor to consider, especially if you're concerned about brightness or creating a specific ambience. Colours with higher LRVs tend to make a room feel brighter and more spacious, while colours with lower LRVs can create a more intimate or cosy atmosphere.

Dune White has an LRV of 80.18, which is rather low for a white, placing it on the edge of the off-white range. It is still high enough to brighten up a dark space but it’s not as high as other warm whites like White Dove or Simply White.

How does Dune White look in different lighting exposures?

Lighting greatly impacts how a paint colour is perceived within a space, whether it be natural or artificial light. Natural light varies throughout the day making colours look slightly different in the morning and the evening, which is why it’s essential to use samples before fully committing to a paint colour so you can see how colours look at various times of the day and you can decide if a paint colour is the right one for your space.

Dune White is a white colour that works well in any setting. In a north-facing room, its greige tones can bring a subtle warmth and help balance out the cool light. In a south-facing room, it can lean slightly more into its warmth to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. It is the ideal white if you want warmth without any yellow or creamy undertones.

Which white paint colour is Dune White best paired with?

Thinking about painting your walls in Dune White but not sure how to paint your trims? For a cohesive and unified look, consider painting your trims in Dune White as well (simply choose a different sheen for contrast). To highlight the beautiful tones of Dune White, you can also consider a crisper and brighter white such as BM Chantilly Lace OC-65, BM Simply White OC-117, or High Reflective White SW 7757.

What colours can I pair Dune White with?

Dune White pairs beautifully with muted warm tones. Consider darker greiges like BM Revere Pewter, browns or taupes like BM Bear Creek, blue-greens, muted dark blues such BM Hale Navy, or dark greys like BM Kendall Charcoal.
