Paint Colour Review: Gossamer Veil by Sherwin Williams

Gossamer Veil SW 9165 is a beautiful versatile warm grey known for its soft elegance and ability to transform spaces. It is sometimes considered a light greige, although its strong grey base keeps it with the grey hues. Gossamer Veil is a great colour to consider to create a serene living room, a cosy bedroom, or a welcoming entryway.

Today, I will tell you all about Gossamer Veil; its undertones, Light Reflectance Value (LRV), how it interacts with different lighting exposures, best white trim colours, and ideal coordinating colours.

Is this warm grey the right shade for you? Keep reading to find out…

Gossamer Veil’s undertones

Gossamer Veil is a medium warm grey, hinting at the world of greige colours but with a strong grey base. It has subtle green undertones and a very slight hint of violet, which can worry some of you but, given the right lighting and exposure, it can look beautiful. Gossamer Veil is a great option for those who want a neutral colour that isn’t too cold or stark.

Gossamer Veil’s LRV

LRV (or Light Reflectance Value) helps determine how much light is absorbed or reflected by a paint colour. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 100, 0 being absolute black and absorbing all light, and 100 being pure white and reflecting all light. The higher the LRV, the lighter and brighter the paint colour. The LRV of a paint colour is an important factor to consider, especially if you're concerned about brightness or creating a specific ambience. Colours with higher LRVs tend to make a room feel brighter and more spacious, while colours with lower LRVs can create a more intimate or cosy atmosphere.

With an LRV of 62, Gossamer Veil sits comfortably in the light-to-medium range, meaning it reflects a decent amount of light, helping to brighten up a space without being overly stark or sterile. In spaces with plenty of natural light, it can enhance the brightness of the room, creating an open and welcoming atmosphere; while in areas with less natural light, it can hold itself well and offer warmth and subtle depth without appearing too dark or heavy.

Gossamer Veil’s LRV makes it an excellent choice for rooms where you want to bring some brightness and an open feel but with a touch more colour, depth, and character than a traditional white or off-white. It works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways, where you want a versatile backdrop that can adapt to various lighting conditions and decor styles.

How does Gossamer Veil look in different lighting exposures?

Gossamer Veil’s undertones can shift depending on the lighting conditions of a room which is why it is highly recommended to get samples first and make sure it is the right colour for your space. In a south-facing room, where the light is warmer and more golden, Gossamer Veil can take on a cosy, slightly warm hue, while in a north-facing room, where the light is cooler and more diffused, you might notice the grey tones becoming more prominent, giving the colour a slightly cooler appearance.

The same goes for artificial lighting. Warm incandescent or LED lights will make the colour feel warmer and more intimate. On the other hand, cooler LED or fluorescent lighting will accentuate the grey undertones, lending a more modern and sophisticated look to the space.

Best white trim colours to use with Gossamer Veil

Gossamer Veil is quite versatile and flexible with white paint colours for your trims. Some of my favourite whites from Sherwin Williams to pair with this warm grey are Pure White SW 7005, a soft white with a hint of warmth offering a crisp contrast without feeling too stark or cold, and Extra White SW 7006, a crisper and brighter white with minimal undertones for a starker contrast. You could also consider two other popular whites from Benjamin Moore: Chantilly Lace OC-65, a bright white with barely any undertones, and White Dove OC-17, slightly darker with subtle yellow undertones.

Ideal coordinating colours with Gossamer Veil

Gossamer Veil pairs wonderfully with soft whites like Aesthetic White SW 7035, other warm neutrals such as Dovetail SW 7018, deep earthy tones like Urbane Bronze SW 7048, and even soft greens or blues such as Sea Salt SW 6204 or Riverway SW 6222.
