First things first, what is e-design?  

E-design (or online interior design) is a new interior design service that started appearing in the last few years. Pushed by new technologies and platforms, it is an affordable way to get that professional help you need.  

At first, most traditional interior designers were reluctant to the idea of online interior design but, with current times, almost all of them shifted their beliefs and decided to follow the trend. At Suite Minded, we believe that e-design is not the “low-cost” version of interior design, but it is a new market in itself. It appeals to a certain audience that we review more in details later on in this blog post.

Main differences between traditional interior design and online interior design 

There are some main differences between traditional interior design and virtual design that can help you decide whether e-design is the best option for you. 

• Different design methods 

One of those differences is in the design process itself. When you choose traditional interior design, your interior designer will come directly to your house to meet you for an at-home consultation, take measurements, photos, assess your interior design needs and requirements, your style, etc... Your designer will then come up with a full design project, select your new furniture, and take care of ordering and installing.  

A traditional interior designer will also carefully select new fabrics and materials to suit your newly designed space. He will take the time to review them with you and make sure you are satisfied with the selection.  

Most traditional interior designers are responsible for communicating and working with various contractors on your project. They take care of everything during the designing process, from start to finish, top to bottom. From measuring your whole room to styling your new bookshelves.  

Like the term ‘e-design’ conveys, it is a virtual interior design service which means everything takes place online. Unlike with a traditional interior designer, if you hire an e-designer you won’t need to set up an at-home consultation, you will have to take photos and measurements of your room yourself which can be a difficult task.  

However, being an online service doesn’t mean you lose the personal support you can have with a traditional interior designer. Through emails, phone calls or video calls, your e-designer will be able to help you every step of the way with advice on how to measure your room accurately and take photos. This provides an easy communication between you and your e-designer, as you don’t need to set time aside to meet with your designer. Communicating via emails can also mean a clearer understanding (less chance for miscommunication issues), and can serve as evidence. 

Usually, the e-design process will start with a design questionnaire that you send back to your e-designer with as much information as possible in order for the latter to better understand your needs and your requirements. If need be, your e-designer will be in touch with you for further details.  

• Affordability  

Another main difference between traditional interior design and e-design is in regards to the budget you set for your project. Because traditional interior designers take care of all the different aspects of your design project, from the first at-home consultation to the finishing touches, it is obviously more expensive than e-design. 

Usually, traditional interior designers charge hourly fees which, depending on the scope of your design project, can equal to thousands of dollars in total.  

On the contrary, most e-designers charge a flat-fee per room, including various services for each package. At Suite Minded, our full virtual interior decorating package with 3D renderings is AU$425. On top of this fee, you have to add the price of furniture and any paint or material you choose. However, you are free to shop around for any cheaper furniture or items.  

All in all, e-design is a more affordable option to restyle your interior if you are on a tight budget.  

• Timeframe 

One of the main advantages to e-design is its rather short timeframe for project delivery. While working with a traditional interior designer could take several months or sometimes years depending on the size of the project, an e-designer will usually provide you with a full design plan within weeks. 

If you are in a rush to redecorate your interior, or simply can’t wait to see the final result, hiring an e-designer might be the best option for you.

When hiring an e-designer, you will be in charge of executing the ideas provided to you by your designer or decorator. He or She will send you a final design project including colour selection, floorplan layout or 3D renderings depending on the type of package you purchased, along with detailed design notes and recommendations to help you pull your new space together.  

After receiving your final project, you will be the one in charge of ordering furniture and décor items, installing and styling, as well as painting if required.  

Thus, e-design is best suited to people enjoying a bit of DIY. However, there is no need to worry. Your virtual designer will provide you with enough instructions to guide you.
