Paint Colour Review: Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore

When it comes to choosing the perfect neutral paint colour, Revere Pewter (HC-172) is a favourite, very often considered. This classic greige (blend of grey and beige) is one of Benjamin Moore’s most popular neutral shades and offers a perfect balance of warmth and elegance. With its green undertones, it has a timeless and versatile appeal that is sought after in interior decorating, making Revere Pewter a go-to choice.

In this blog post, we talk about its unique undertones, its LRV, and how it transforms under different lighting conditions. We also discuss the best white trim colours and coordinating colours to pair with Revere Pewter to create a cohesive, sophisticated, and inviting space.

Is Revere Pewter the right colour for your home? Keep reading to find out.

Revere Pewter’s LRV

LRV (or Light Reflectance Value) helps determine how much light is absorbed or reflected by a paint colour. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 100, 0 being absolute black and absorbing all light, and 100 being pure white and reflecting all light. The higher the LRV, the lighter and brighter the paint colour. The LRV of a paint colour is an important factor to consider, especially if you're concerned about brightness or creating a specific ambience. Colours with higher LRVs tend to make a room feel brighter and more spacious, while colours with lower LRVs can create a more intimate or cosy atmosphere.

Revere Pewter has an LRV of 55.05 putting it right in the middle of the range. Its LRV isn’t high enough to brighten up your space, but it has enough depth and colour to add some character and a very slight moodiness. Its green undertones and medium LRV make it a very grounding colour that will give a warm, earthy, and inviting feel to any space.

Revere Pewter in different lighting conditions

Lighting greatly impacts how a paint colour is perceived within a space, whether it be natural or artificial light. Natural light varies throughout the day making colours look slightly different in the morning and the evening, which is why it’s essential to use samples before fully committing to a paint colour so you can see how colours look at various times of the day and you can decide if a paint colour is the right one for your space.

Under a cool light in a north-facing room or afternoon eastern light, Revere Pewter can lean into its grey/green tones more but its warm base can help balance out the cool light without looking too warm. It will, instead, create a balanced, grounding look. Under a warm light in a south-facing room or afternoon western light, it can look slightly warmer but its greige tones help it stay in the neutral range. Its green tones can help tone down the warm light and create a more balanced look, which is ideal if you don’t like spaces that look overly warm. Revere Pewter can look a bit flat and take on a slightly violet tone when used in a darker room or on darker/dimly lit walls, however, this rarely happens.

Where can I use Revere Pewter in my home?

Lucky enough, Revere Pewter looks great in virtually any space, so if you love this paint colour and it fits your interior’s features, go for it! Its warm greige tones can create a welcoming and cohesive feel, whether used as a main wall colour or as an accent. Use it successfully on exterior or interior walls paired with a light trim.

In a living room or a bedroom, Revere Pewter can transform your space into a cosy and relaxing retreat. Its neutral tones work well with many different design styles, allowing you to create the interior of your dreams.

It’s also a perfect shade for kitchens, either on walls or cabinetry. It pairs beautifully with cool finishes such as stainless steel appliances or black hardware. It can add a gorgeous warmth to a kitchen with an abundance of natural light, giving an earthy natural feel to the space.

Revere Pewter can also successfully be used in hallways and entryways as it will beautifully set the tone for the rest of your home. Its neutral shade can make these transitional spaces feel more open and welcoming, while seamlessly connecting the different rooms.

What about white trim colours?

The right white trim can provide a crisp, clean contrast that enhances the warmth and elegance of Revere Pewter. Here are some of my favourite white paint colours to pair with:

White Dove (OC-17): White Dove complements the subtle warmth of Revere Pewter while creating a soft contrast. Its yellow undertones will help create a harmonious and inviting look.

Simply White (OC-117): Simply White is a bright, clean white with just a hint of warmth that will provide a fresh, modern contrast with Revere Pewter.

Chantilly Lace (OC-65): Chantilly Lace is one of the purest whites from Benjamin Moore. It will offer a clean contrast to Revere Pewter, highlighting its beautiful tones and maintaining a timeless and elegant look.

Oxford White (CC-30): Oxford White is a bright white with slight yellow and green undertones. Its subtle warmth and undertones pair nicely with Revere Pewter to create a soft but clean contrast.

What coordinating colours work best with Revere Pewter?

Revere Pewter pairs well with a variety of different colours. Consider a muted beige or a lighter shade of greige with similar undertones like Edgecomb Gray for a monochromatic look. It also pairs well with many warm whites or off-whites such as White Dove, Cloud White, or Ballet White for an elegant, fresh, and inviting look. For more contrast, consider a blue-grey or warm green like Boreal Forest, a muted navy blue such as Hale Navy, or a warm dark grey with similar undertones like Chelsea Gray or Kendall Charcoal.

Overall, Revere Pewter is a beautiful neutral and balanced greige to add an elegant, cosy, earthy and natural touch to your interior.
