A sideboard, buffet or a console table can be a great way to show your styling skills. They are extremely versatile pieces of furniture as you can change your home décor accessories and artwork according to seasons or as it pleases you. No need to invest in a brand-new sideboard or console table to change the look of your interior. Simply add a new vase, table lamp or change your wall art.

A sideboard can be used to create visual interest and can become a focal point in your interior by incorporating a statement piece of art, a large vase or a beautiful mirror. It can also be used as an option for extra storage with boxes and baskets.

The idea when styling a sideboard is to create visual interest with a central piece on your wall, behind your sideboard. This can be a wall art, a mirror or framed photos. You will style the rest of your sideboard around your central piece. Add elements of various heights (tall, medium and small) and shapes. This will bring visual balance and cohesion. For example, you can have a beautiful piece of art on your wall and add a table lamp, a medium size vase with gorgeous flowers, and smaller accessories like a tray, bowl or a string of wooden beads. You can also place the smaller objects on a stack of decorative books.

You can either choose to place your decorative elements in a symmetric or asymmetric way. For instance, you can place a piece of art or a mirror on one side of your sideboard rather than in the centre to add more interest.

If you are unsure how to style your sideboard, buffet or console table, take a look at these different styles I created for you to boost your inspiration. The links to every furniture and accessories selected are included under each photo.

1/ Coastal style

The wood and rattan of this beautiful sideboard from Temple and Webster gives us coastal and beach vibes, so I decided to bring home décor accessories in the same style. The wall art reminds us of a coastal landscape and its colours are soothing and relaxing. This piece of art becomes the focal point and the sideboard is styled around it. We have here a variety of heights with the tall pampa grass stems, the medium size wooden table lamp and small sculpture and candles. We also have different shapes, materials and colours that all add to the coastal style of the sideboard. Overall, this sideboard’s décor brings balance and symmetry.

2/ Contemporary sideboard

This sideboard styling has a more contemporary vibe than the previous. I love the beautiful acacia wood sideboard from Temple and Webster and especially the herringbone pattern and brass finishes which gives it its contemporary look. Here, the focal point is again the wall art. The décor items all have gold accents to match the brass handles and legs from the sideboard, while the decorative bowl also has blue colours to match the piece of art.

3/ Farmhouse inspired sideboard table

The central piece of this farmhouse inspired styling option is the mango wood sideboard from Livingstyles. I love the dark wood colour combined with rattan doors giving it a real natural look. The arched black mirror on the side gives a bit more visual interest to this sideboard. The warm greige colour on the wall as well as the gray ceramic table lamp and wooden decorative elements create balance. The beige runner rug adds a bit of brightness and colour. Overall, this design is simple but cohesive.

4/ Modern sideboard

This modern sideboard styling is in the black and gray tones. The lines are clean and the decorative elements provide a variety of heights all in the same colours creating visual balance. The focal point here is the printed black and white wall art of Audrey Hepburn. This sideboard option would look great in a bedroom or a living room.

This classic sideboard would look great in a living room as well as in an entryway. The beautiful traditional style mirror is the focal point here. The decorative elements are all in a traditional style and in natural colours and materials. The royal blue from the table lamp and the decorative bowl brings a touch of colour to this sideboard. Overall, the materials and colours selected create a rather soothing and relaxing design.

What I love about bohemian interior style is that there are no design rules. You can freely combine furniture pieces and accessories from various styles, in different colours, shapes and materials. In this mood board, I have selected this absolutely beautiful handcrafted green sideboard from Lounge Lovers. The main piece is the mango wood mirror that adds to the boho style. The contemporary looking gold metal sconces match the brass legs of the sideboard. All the decorative elements provide balance, cohesion and symmetry.
